Diapers Cost ~$1,000 a Year. Here's Every Legit Way to Pay Less

Updated 2026-08-07 · 6 min read

A newborn runs through 8–12 diapers a day — roughly $80–$100 a month at brand-name prices, close to $1,000 in year one. About 2 in 5 families with young kids report struggling to afford them, and no federal program (not SNAP, not WIC) covers diapers. Here's the full toolkit, from free to cheap.

Free: diaper banks are real and everywhere

  • The National Diaper Bank Network has 240+ member banks across all 50 states, distributing to hundreds of thousands of kids monthly through pantries, WIC offices, and family centers.
  • Dial or text 211 — the fastest route to the closest distribution point (many also stock wipes and formula).
  • A growing handful of states have cut sales tax on diapers, and some run pilot diaper-benefit programs — 211 will know yours.

Cheap: win the price-per-diaper game

  • Compute price per diaper, not per box. Brand-name runs roughly 25–40¢; store brands (which meet the same safety standards) run 10–20¢. That difference alone is ~$400/year.
  • Don't stockpile newborn size. Babies outgrow NB in weeks; size up when in doubt (bigger sizes also mean fewer blowouts).
  • Subscribe-and-save programs at the big retailers stack 5–15% off plus coupons — set it, and cancel anytime.
  • Per-size sweet spot: buy the smallest quantity of the current size and the bulk box of the next size.

Free-ish: the registry angle

Registry welcome boxes include diaper samples from multiple brands — the cheapest way to find which fits your baby before committing to a bulk box — and the completion discount (10–15%) applies to diaper cases too.
